It is a bit of a mystery to this day. In the medieval times, Valentine was a very popular name. It was disputed that as many as three saints could have been what we think of as St. Valentine and the Catholic church does indeed recognize all three. As many as 11 other saints with the name Valentine are honored by the Roman Catholic Church. Confusing!
Pope Gelasius (in 496 A.D) was the first to set aside February 14 as a day to honor St Valentine. However, there are many stories as to what brought this about. Was it the attempt to outlaw pagan festival of Lupercus? Or was it a day to honor Juno, the Queen of the Roman gods, goddesses, women, and marriage? Or was it because Valentine helped Christians- a crime at the time- to marry? Perhaps all of the above brought us to what we currently view as Valentine's Day.
It wasn't until the 18th century that the day became associated with the exchange of tokens of affection. Some say this is the famous poet Chaucer to blame as he talked of birds that paired off into couples mid -February "when every foul cometh ther to chese his mate". Old English aside, it is a day filled with love and especially with children the reminder that love fills one's hearts. The giving of your message in whatever chosen way celebrates goodwill and at the very base- a friendship.
